I would like to express my gratitude to many people in Gunma Prefecture. I would like to thank Gunma Prefectural Government, Gunma Prefectural Library, Miyama Bunko, Ōta Ward of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and The Bank of Yokohama, Ltd. for their assistance with my research on Gunma and Japanese history related to Gunma. This book could not have been written without the much-appreciated assistance of many people in Gunma and the above organizations.

All Japanese names of people in the book are written in Japanese style: last name first, first name last. Some vowels in the book have a bar over them, which is a macron. The macron indicates a long sound, which can change the meaning in Japanese. A ryokan is a Japanese inn; Ryōkan was a Zen Buddhist monk.
